The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is a range-extending electric car that goes a step past traditional hybrids to make fuel efficient driving more widely accessible than ever before.

Technology & Environment

The Chevy Volt is different from the conventional hybrids; in conventional hybrids, once the battery runs out, a gas engine takes over and the car is not any more fuel efficient than a regular sedan. But with the Volt, this isn't the case. Its electric charge will power the vehicle for up to 40 miles initially; this is more than sufficient for most drivers' daily commutes. After that, the Volt's range-extending gas generator continues to create electricity, allowing the car to stay running on electricity for hundreds more miles of efficient driving on a single tank of gasoline (up to 300 miles is the standard estimate, depending driving conditions).

Charging the Volt takes about 10 hours for a single full charge (which costs roughly $1.50 in electricity). Owners can also install a 240 volt outlet, which allows the Volt to fully charge in as little as four hours. A single full charge nets up to 40 miles of driving, but the Volt can also drive on a partial charge with no problem.

The electric operation of the Volt creates no emissions, and when charged with electricity from renewable resources (wind, solar, hydroelectric) is even more eco-friendly.

Interior, Design & Features

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is more than just a smart drivetrain: the overall driver and passenger experience is exceptional. This four-door hatchback boasts plenty of interior space (the backseat comfortably carries two adults, and the rear cargo area is generous and easily accessible with the rear hatch door).

The Volt features smart, clean styling and well-integrated technology. Inside, dark paneling with bright, clean accents and a crisp digital monitor create an exceptionally sleek and contemporary, yet approachable, aesthetic.

Most notable is the Volt's OnStar mobile app, which allows owners to monitor and interact with the vehicle remotely. From checking on charge status and charge completion time to adjusting charge priorities, activating remote start, and unlocking doors, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt harnesses today's smartphone technology to create an incredibly convenient and personalized ownership experience.

Availability and Financials

The Volt has been designed from the start to be an electric vehicle for the masses, with a broader audience appeal and production numbers that make it accessible. Initial plans for the Volt's production include 10,000 vehicles for 2011 and 30,000 in 2012, with additional growth from there.

Especially notable is the warranty that covers the battery of every single 2011 Chevrolet Volt: 10-years/150,000 miles. The expense of the battery replacement has been an issue of complaint for conventional hybrid drivers, so Chevrolet has addressed this from square one with a long-lasting, high-endurance battery that's covered for an exceptional amount of time.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt's release begins in California, Detroit, and Washington D.C. before opening up to nationwide availability. It qualifies for the maximum federal tax credit for fuel efficient vehicles, which is $7,500, pending availability of the credit.
